19/10/09: Champion of Champion Semi Final

Our Champion of Champion Semi Final encounter was a very tough match. The girls found it very hard to play such a high level match after 3 weeks off due to the school holidays.

Our opponent Parklea was a very good side, tough, physical, hard to the ball, an excellent passing side that troubled our girls continually.

The first half Parklea were far superior. However our backs particularly Logan and Rebecca fought hard to tackle and block every shot. Our goalkeeper Ileah made some great saves but eventually a good shot from outside the box ducked in just under the crossbar. No goalkeeper of this age could have stopped this very fine shot.

At the break I told the girls I didn't mind losing if we played well but I didn't want to finish the season playing as we were.

The second half we turned the game around right from the kickoff. The match was more even and the play ebbed and flowed from end to end. We worked harder in midfield and had more shots on goal than our opposition.

Emily had a great half getting many shots away but we couldn't get the equaliser. To Parklea's credit they scrambled well in defence and blocked many close range shots. Many players were well below their best but we were beaten on the day by a better team.

Overall a great season from the girls winning Major and Minor Premierships, MWFA best defensive side, highest achieving Beacon Hill junior side, Quarter Final State cup and Semi Final Champion of Champion.

The girls can be very proud of their achievements this year and I hope to see all the players running around for Beacon Hill in 2010.

19/10/09: State Titles

Last week from Monday 12th to Friday 16th Dubbo hosted the State Title competition for girls under 12s, 14s and 16s.

Girls from all over NSW competed against the best players of equal age from Clubs of NSW Premier and Super league Competitions.

Many ex players from Beacon Hill have made high stages either at amateur or Representative level over the course of the years, and also in this competition we had three juniors: Nicole Simonsen, Aorianna Sussanna and Loredana Vescio. Nicole wearing the gloves for the under 14s (still an U12 Player!!) and Aorianna and Loredana for the under 16s.

All three played well making our Club proud.

In the U16 team two players from Wakehurst, Gabi Miles and Georgia Hamilton also attended the State Titles and did extremely well.

Beacon Hill FC 12A Ladies 2009

12A LADIES PREMIERS & GRAND FINAL CHAMPIONS 2009

Having secured the Major Premiership by 1 point the 12A girls faced up against runners up Wakehurst in the Grand Final at Cromer 1. Each contest between these two teams has been closely fought.

The first half found us under sustained pressure in our own half with our goalkeeper Jassy making some great saves to keep us in the match 0 - 0 at half time.

In the second half Wakehurst faltered after expending so much energy and we picked up. The girls had them under pressure until finally Melissa took a beautiful corner volleyed into goal by Ashley.

We had the better of the second half and finished winners 1 - 0 on the day to complete the season undefeated.

Great work and well done girls!

07/05/09: Technical Area and Official Identification

On most fields in the MWFA two Technical Areas will be marked out.

These may vary in size and exact location, but generally are rectangular areas on the same side of the field near the halfway line extending forward to within a metre of the sideline.

The Coach, substitutes and other team officials must remain within the confines of their team's Technical Area for the duration of play.

The substitutes should have their playing shirts covered to avoid confusion with the on-field players.

Team Coaches and Managers and any other team officials must wear an identifying ID badge for the period in which they are acting in that capacity.

Only officials wearing badges are permitted in the technical area.

Only one person at a time is authorised to convey tactical instructions.

The coach and other occupants of the technical area must behave in a responsible manner.

Officials may leave this area to treat injured players or if they wish to deal with matters not concerned with the coaching of the team on the field. (e.g. preparing half time refreshment)

On fields which have no technical area marked, the coaches from both teams stand on the same side of the field.

The same general guidelines should be followed regarding the positioning of the coaches and substitutes from both teams near the halfway flags.

The coach and manager must wear the official ID.

Just because a technical area is not marked does not mean that coaches can wander up and down the sideline nor stand on opposite sides of the field.

Even if the referee does not police the area, teams are obliged to follow the guidelines above. Failure to do so may result in a fine for the Club and for repeat offences loss of points for the teams involved.

19/01/09: Small Sided Games (SSG)

- Article by Phil Moss, courtesy of: The Manly Daily

The "Year of the SSG" has arrived as the Manly Warringah Football Association prepares to find out first-hand what all the fuss is about.

Small Sided Games (SSG) will be introduced for all under-6 teams this year, with the MWFA starting out with a zonal program - clubs in certain zones will only play each other.

There is an education program in the planning stages with each zone set to be addressed at information nights throughout March ahead of the April launch. Football Federation Australia (FFA) will also launch a DVD packed with coaching tips and information of the smaller format of the round-ball code.

With mixed feedback from other associations already involved with SSG, it will be very interesting to see how the players and parents accept it on the northern beaches. The whole idea behind the format is to give young players more touches on the ball - which certainly can't be a bad thing. Players can train and be coached as much as they want but unless they are playing games and making decisions under the sort of pressure that only a game can generate, they will not learn and develop their game.

While the MWFA will fine-tune the rules over the coming weeks and distribute them to the clubs, there will be no goalkeepers and only small goals. That has led to some players and parents from other areas complaining that the 'competitive edge' is missing from the new SSG format.

And that is one of the main reasons the MWFA has decided to introduce it to the under-6s only for this season. That way, the majority of youngsters who have already tasted the traditional format of sub-junior football won't be asked to play the new SSG format. If the child started early and played under-6 last year and has another year in that age group, they will be exposed to SSG this year.

The key from my perspective is the coaches and how they manage SSG with their players. Even playing-time and coaching the correct techniques and aspects of the game are crucial to the development of the youngsters and, in turn, their desire to come back and play in future years. SSG is fun-based and all coaches-managers must understand that and structure training sessions the same way.

My thoughts on SSG - and I would hope all involved take the same stance - is to give it a go before you form an opinion. Change is sometimes hard to accept but, if it's for the good of the game and the players that make the game, it's got to be worth a shot.
