1st Timers ~ Chelsea Buns

Who would have thought that a bunch of 30 – 40++ year old women, who use to spend Tuesday nights watching Grey's Anatomy & Survivor would don boots & shin pads and run around a soccer field!

That's exactly what nearly 30 women did, making up 4 teams of 'First Timers' in the Six-A-Side Competition.

One of those teams are the 'Chelsea Buns' (with stunning outfits!!), we took to the fields each week with nervous excitement, just hoping not to embarrass ourselves in front of our ever supportive families.

Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine we would finish top of the table, and even less likely be undefeated... So far! But that, under the ever patient guidance of our coach, Darren Carter, is just what the Chelsea Buns have achieved.

The competition has been very tight with lots of close games and friendly rivalry between school mums.

Last night's semi-finals was a nail biter till the final whistle.

The grand final next week will be a close match (with the two teams predominantly made up of Beacon Hill School mums). The outcome will be anyone's guess!!

I speak for everyone when I say that we've all had an absolute ball.

After spending many years on the sidelines supporting our kids, I, for one have developed a new found respect for my sons. Trying, with some semblance of control, to dribble the ball (with both feet) and then kick the ball in the direction you want, I've discovered, is not quite as easy as it looks!!

I would like to make a special mention to our referee – Herbert, who every week would patiently explain the rules and point out what we did wrong, especially with those sideline throw ins (again – not as easy as it looks!)

A HUGE THANK YOU to Maria Pollard and the other volunteers who tirelessly give up their time each week to make this competition possible. BHFC should be very proud of their efforts. As a direct result of this competition, a second (very competitive) O/35 Ladies team has been formed to compete in the winter season.

Good Luck Ladies!!
