MATCH REPORT
First timers Grand Final
The Hags v The Chelsea Buns

Tuesday night saw the battle of the Beacon Hill mums, all playing in their first football competition.

What became clear as the game kicked off was that both teams had improved remarkably from their first games. Gone were the giggling and apologetic hugs, replaced by determined looks and no shortage of nice touches.

The game was played at a cracking pace with the ball moving swiftly from end to end. Both defences were holding well until Merry with the first clear chance of the game slotted home the opener for the Hags (Have A GoeS), a goal many seasoned players would have been proud of.

The tempo increased as both sides battled for the next goal. The Buns had the ball down the Hags end for several minutes bombarding the goal but couldn't breakthrough. A good clearance saw Merry away again on goal and for the second time in the match saw her shot on the run flash in to the back of the net. 2 - 0 to the Hags and an upset was on the cards.

With the enthusiatcic crowd willing both teams on the first half came to an end.

The second half started like the first with chances at both ends. The Buns knew they had to score next and they were pushing hard to get back into the game. But determined defence was keeping the Hags in front and another break down the right saw Sally finish with a great strike in to the bottom corner giving the Buns goalie no chance.

Fiona Brewster was showing some great skills for the Hags and Sharon Porter and Katina Hurd were full of running. For the Buns Gabrielle was always involved in the thick of the action as was Tracy Wood who had a great left foot shot at goal. Rae-Maree was always a threat with her long clearances and big throws and Chambers always looked dangerous with the ball at her feet. Leanne Steele came out of goal for the Buns in the 2nd half and after an injury plagued competiition looked quite dangerous at times in this final, it was great to see her quads responding to her brain.

At 3-0 many teams would have given up but the Buns continued to press and Jo Carter almost scored the goal of the season with a great volley that crashed in to the Hags crossbar. Kylie made several good saves for the Hags as the game came to a close ensuring the Hags held on to their lead winning the game 3-0.

Aaron Kemp, the coach of the Hags and husband of Nicola or 'love' as he kindly calls to her when telling her to stop talking at training or to stop worrying about their 3 children, has taken the Hags from no skills to reasonably able footballers. Congratulations on your first big win with the girls and good luck for the Beacon Bill O 35s 'B' team this season on the 'BIG' pitch!

The Hags missed Laura in the final and could not have got there without her endless defence and big kicks down the defence end!

It was a really good game played in great spirit. Both teams thoroughly enjoyed the game and indeed the whole competion. The celebrations went on for sometime after the final whistle and if they hadn't turned off the floodlights they could have gone on much longer!

1st Timers

Chelsea Buns

Who would have thought that a bunch of 30 – 40++ year old women, who use to spend Tuesday nights watching Grey's Anatomy & Survivor would don boots & shin pads and run around a soccer field!

That's exactly what nearly 30 women did, making up 4 teams of 'First Timers' in the Six-A-Side Competition.

One of those teams are the 'Chelsea Buns' (with stunning outfits!!), we took to the fields each week with nervous excitement, just hoping not to embarrass ourselves in front of our ever supportive families.

Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine we would finish top of the table, and even less likely be undefeated... So far! But that, under the ever patient guidance of our coach, Darren Carter, is just what the Chelsea Buns have achieved.

The competition has been very tight with lots of close games and friendly rivalry between school mums.

Last night's semi-finals was a nail biter till the final whistle.

The grand final next week will be a close match (with the two teams predominantly made up of Beacon Hill School mums). The outcome will be anyone's guess!!

I speak for everyone when I say that we've all had an absolute ball. After spending many years on the sidelines supporting our kids, I, for one have developed a new found respect for my sons. Trying, with some semblance of control, to dribble the ball (with both feet) and then kick the ball in the direction you want, I've discovered, is not quite as easy as it looks!!

I would like to make a special mention to our referee – Herbert, who every week would patiently explain the rules and point out what we did wrong, especially with those sideline throw ins (again – not as easy as it looks!)

A HUGE THANK YOU to Maria Pollard and the other volunteers who tirelessly give up their time each week to make this competition possible. BHFC should be very proud of their efforts. As a direct result of this competition, a second (very competitive) O/35 Ladies team has been formed to compete in the winter season.

Good Luck Ladies!!
